I'm on my way...

...to go look at an '01 rebel for my wife. 5000 miles and it's been garage kept. They have 3 other bikes and the guy I talked to said his wife is moving up to a larger bike so I have every reason to suspect that it's been properly maintained. He's asking $1600US - that's about $600 under book and a number I'm comfortable with. We've missed on 4 other Rebels lately and that's the bike my wife really wants - I think it'd be a great starter for her (or anyone really). She got her license last month and has been riding parking lots on my bike and she likes it enough to get her own. Our anniversary is tuesday so I hope it works out... wish me luck. I'll let you know either way.

I'm back already and the deal is done. I picked the bike up for $1600 - 2001 rebel 250 - he'd already had 11 more calls - and I believe him - we've missed out on several ~200 cc bikes in the last couple of weeks despite replying the day the ad was placed. Those little bikes go like hotcakes in Seattle. Anyway, I took a test drive and it rode great. Fun little bike but I don't know that I'd want to get on the highway with it. I see them out there so I suppose it's fine... it just seems so light. I hate dropping $1600 on such a small motor, but I've watched the market really closely lately and I see rebels go for $1500 that are 15-20 years old so I have little doubt we can recoup that cost after we sell it. Sorry to be so longwinded - I'm just excited for my wife. I'm gonna have to get her on the boards so she can tell you this stuff herself! We are hitting the parking lot tonight.

Ha ha. Well your bike hasn't got that big a motor nither.
Man you can't lose. Up here the same bike would go for double that.

No - my bike doesn't have a large motor for sure. Even so, I'm surprised at how much more power it has than that rebel, my 360 being 31 years old and all. The master plan is for my wife to ride the Rebel until she gets comfortable and then take over the cb360 and I'll get a bigger bike that we can both ride on for longer 2-up trips. Even then I think a 750 will be plenty. Whatever the opposite of displacement fever is, I have it. In spite of the fact that I ride a motorcycle I'm far from being a speed freak - whatever the limit is is fine with me. I just work real hard at making sure I don't need to be in a hurry!
I know what you mean about the price. It ran like a top, had 5000 miles on it and there wasn't a scratch on it - and he had a real nice after-market windscreen on there. And like I was saying, fifteen year old rebel 250's with lots more (like 20,000 more) miles have been going for the same price. Some people would rather get a quick sale and have it over with rather than dealing with a bunch of tire-kickers. I'll probably be the same way. Oh well - good for me I guess. If my wife keeps the rubber side down we should easily get out of it for what we have in it whenever she's ready to move up a little. Who knows - she may love the thing and keep it for ten years. Either way, she's real happy to have it and that's what counts the most. It's nice to find something we can do together that we get equally excited about. That can be a tough thing to find.

At that price you might consider holding onto it indefinately. I mean, it's a great bike, and if you're just going to take a quick trip to the corner store do you really want to hop on a 750 shadow or something similar.
Insurance would be dirt cheap, and it might be nice to just have around, specially if you think that you might be having kids who would want to ride some day.

We have a 05 Rebel and so far, I just love it. It's been so much fun! I hope your wife (and you) have as much fun on it as I have had on mine. We also have a V Star, which is great, but for buzzing around town, I find I prefer the Rebel. Not sure I'll ever get on the interstate with it though. (and as a disclaimer, I'm a new rider, so I don't know much about riding yet, just that I love my bike!)

Who knows what we'll end up keeping. I do know my cb360 is 31 years old and near mint and I really want a bigger bike eventually for out of town trips. I wish we could have about 5 bikes but that doesn't really seem feasible. That's a good topic - one day I'm gonna post "how many bikes do you have"? I'm not sure I want to know though... I might get too jealous

Barring aside any financial dilemmas, I'm not sure I'd ever sell a bike.
The idea is the same with my cage- Sure, I could get a couple hundred (or thousand, or whatever) bucks out of it, ... or I could ride it 'till it explodes.
If I buy a new cruiser, I'll keep the old cruiser as a back-up. If I buy a sport bike- well, you know, of course I couldn't sell the cruiser(s), completely different rides and all that- then I'd save my first sport as a backup to a newer sport.
So, unless I'm strapped for cash, I'd probably have no more than four bikes at a time- all for myself. Is that a bad thing?
