Helmet and Curb

I actually have a couple of questions. I didnt want make a bunch of posts so i decided to just write one and ask all the questions in it.

First lets say you park your bike on the street in between two cars with the back tire to the curb. When you come back you find it tipped over on to one of the cars breaking some lights, scratching the paint and denting the car. Now the guy who's car it is, is blaming you for what happened. if it were to go to the insurance companies what would happen? What would you call that a hit and run? What would you do if the guy insisted that you pay for damages?

The other question is ive read some article that said that you shouldn't keep your helmet on your bike outside because the sun and heat can cause tiny cracks and damage to the helmet. Is this true?

Thanks For you the help.

The first question probably depends on whether you were parked in a legal spot or not. If you weren't, chances are no matter what happened it is your fault because he's in a spot, you're not.

If it's a legal spot, then you have yourself a hit & run incident, and you and the guy are both victims. You let your insurance company sort the whole thing out and don't engage the angry guy.

As for helmets + sun, I've heard the same thing but haven't researched it myself. I don't like the idea of leaving a $400 helmet around for people to do things to so I pretty much always take it with me unless I'm just going in for dinner or something.

+1 to what Nalian said.

If you're in a legal spot, you're both victims. If not, sucks for you.

Don't leave your helmet on your bike, especially in the sun, all day. For an hour or two, maybe.

In addition to if you were parked legally or illegally, is since the bike goes forwards or backwards, not sideways-no. Thus something other than the bike caused it to tip over. (wind, car, person)

But you must be parked legally first.

Thanx for all the gr8 feedback. Ill make sure i park legally in case something like that happens. I intend to take my helmet w/ me if ill be away for more then a couple of hours other then that ill probably leave it on. just to bulky to take w/ u for every little stop.

Sun on helmet is a minor worry. What about rain (natural or sprinklers) and sand and theft. Wait till you come back and helmet is full of water or grit or worse case GONE.

IF the situation you described with the bike falling over happened to me. I would call the police.

Never take anyones word when it comes to accidents. Take pictures if you can before moving anything.

Like everyone else said if you were parked legally both of you are victims of a hit & run.

yeah I just cant see leaving my $250 helmet out by my bike unless its for a quick jog into an auto parts store or Home Depot. I just dont want to risk it being stolen (which it takes less than 30 seconds for someone to wait till you walk away so they can steal it).
