What do you think of this bike...

Found a 79 Yamaha sr500 for 450CDN. This will be my first legal bike. Going to look at it tomorrow and have seen pics. Really good shape only 8000km on it, but its been sitting since 86. I know i'd have to get a new battery, tires and do a once over... But has anyone had one of these or have any input....?

I think that was a big thumper, right? Single cylinder? The only caution I would give you is that it is going to take a LOT of work to get road worthy. It's been sitting almost 20 years, so the inside of the tank is shot, the carbs are varnished and will need to be completely re-built, there's a good possibility gaskets will begin seeping. wiring could be brittle, or even chewed by rodents, etc. It will need new tires, too.
I don't mean to discourage you, just don't get in over your head. Good deals can sometimes turn into big money pits.
On the bright side, the fact that it's a single makes it simpler to work on, and probably relatively cheap as long as you can still get parts for it. It would make a good first bike, too. Let us know what you decide
