Ninja 250

#1 Unread post by Prowl3r »

Hi,
I have a 06 Ninja 250 that i just go a few days ago. the owner before me never ride the bike so i got it with only 68 miles on it. i was reading the hand book and it says not to go ever 4k rpm till im over 500 miles and 6k til i have 1000 miles i guess this is so the bike is properly broken in... but in 6th gear im only going 40mph and 40 is a little low for most roads around my place. my question is can i go over 4k or is this very bad for the bike... or what should i do.

this is my very first bike so im a total nub.. plz help
I wanna go fast! I wanna go fast!!

I have heard that the Ninja 250 is best broken in by driving at higher rpms, not crazy high, but 8k won't hurt it. However I do not have one, so maybe someone will come along and confirm.

That's a standard sticker Kawasaki puts on most of their bikes. In the case of the 250, staying below 4000rpms is pretty much impossible.

There's a lot of controversy on how to properly break in a bike, so just go with whichever method you prefer and ignore that sticker. Remove it even :)

There's a 250 parked outside my apartment every night but it's not mine, it's my friend's :)

There are some 250 owners here at TMW, and there's also http://ninja250.org/ which has a wealth of information, including on break in

the way to properly break it in is to ride it hard.

When it comes to break in procedures you're going to find a million different opinions out there.

I've put about 900 miles on my ninja250. I too tried to stay under 4k at first but found it next to impossible. I was riding around the city in 6th gear and constantly shifting. A nightmare for a newbie. I gave that up pretty fast. I ended up just keeping it under 8k for the first 500. Just generally taking it easy on the bike.

I'm no mechanic and can't say what's right or wrong, but my bike is still running well.

When I was picking up my 250 from the dealer, I saw the little break-in sticker on the Tach and balked. The dealer saw me and laughed, he said, just don't red line it and you'll be fine. So I have been just driving normal, shifting when I hear or see that the tach is nearing 7k. But yeah, you hit 6th gear around 40mph. A bit nerve racking when you are on the highway doing 75-80 and you are on your last gear and the rpm's are hovering around 9rpms. I've gotten use to it.

I hear other weird noises and such, like a high pitched humming noise now when I turn it off.... (I've heard the fan, and that was NOT the fan, and engine was hot and fan didn't turn on......if it happens again, no fan noise buy high pitched humming, maybe fan broke???) And my idle was way high, found the little gadget that turns that down and I'm slowely moving it down (idle is now at 3k down from 4,500. I've only gone about 459 miles on bike and I'm still learning its quirks.

Just try to not get too anxious about the bike, just concentrate what your doing on the road. They have a long history with newby riders owning them and so thier credibility and hardeness with being abused by inexperienced riders is pretty impressive and long and you rarely hear about them falling apart.

Is it the noise of the gas vapors or whatever wheezing out? More of a wheeee or ssssss than a hum though.
