Valve Clearance Check
Valve Clearance Check
I've been riding for 2 years now. I just bought a new Yamaha V-Star 1300 Tourer yesterday. At about 600 miles, they recommend having the valve clearance checked by a mechanic. Does this involve halfway tearing the bike down to do this? Does it involve removing the heads, thus breaking the factory seals, etc.? It just seems like a drastic step to take, plus they recommend the same check at 4000 miles, etc. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. BenBob.

Yup, I had to do that on my v star 650 as well. It does pretty much require tearing the bike apart to do.
My friend's brand new Ninja 250 requires its first valve check at 600 miles as well. Where as my SV only requires its first valve check at 24,000 miles. It seems the "old school" style engines require more frequent valve checks/adjustments.

Thanks very much for the reply reference the Valve Clearance Check. It still seems like such a shame to tear a bike down to do that after so few miles. I drove my last Yamaha for 3600 miles and had not had it done. It purred like the day I bought it. I understand the warranty issues involved with not doing the clearance check if something happened later on. Again, thanks for the reply..........Such a shame to tear a new bike down....
