How do I check the oil on my bike?
I have a 2005 GZ250. I see where the oil goes, but there is no dipstick, just the cap which i screwed off. Should I see oil "in there"?

I'll bet dollars to donuts there's a little sight glass on the right side of the crankcase. Down low.
You'll want to have someone hold the bike upright, and then squat down next to it, and look through the glass. There should be min/max lines, and the oil should be between them.
If you're confident, you can crouch down beside the bike, grab the right handlebar with your right hand, while squeezing the brake, straighten out the wheel, then tip the bike towards yourself. Balance it with one hand and look through the sight glass.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
