Oil Leak

#1 Unread post by Tarheel365 »

i just picked up a 91 kawasaki zr750 zephyr
It idled fine and ran ok(some hesitation) earlier but when i rode it about 2 miles in the afternoon it just stalled out at a stop(it idled below 1k rpm)
I managed to start it up again and rode it to a friend's house. it stalled out there when i came to a stop. i also noticed oil spilling out from under the air box in the same general area as the shifter. i'm not sure if its coming from the airbox/carb or coming from the engine right underneath it. but there was alot of oil coming out. after about 20-30 seconds it stopped.

This is the first time i've ridden a 4 cylinder bike. i have no idea what its supposed to sound like and what its supposed to feel like. when i rode it there was some hesitation and it didn't feel like alot of power. the previous owner said It needed a new air filter too which explains the hesitation.

I'm not sure where the oil is coming from.

Your oil leak sounds like it might be coming from the crankcase breather. If so, it means that something in the engine is allowing gasses past into the crankcase..... :(
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

problem fixed...new problem

it was leaking because he overfilled the oil and during operation it would flow back into the airbox.

and it was hesitating because the spark plugs were bad. one had no gap at all.

now she runs well

i have a nice and rusty collector pipe which seems to have a bit of a leak and seems like white smoke is coming out of it.( although this may be oil that is burning off under the engine from the leak)

i don't wanna buy a new header pipe so is there a way to fix this area?

How rusty is it, Tarheel? Can you have someone lean the bike over a bit so you can inspect it?
If it's just a pinhole or two, a metal fabrication shop or welder may be able to patch it up.
If the rust is only external, you can wire-brushor sand the rust off and give it a couple coats of ceramic (high heat) paint.
Let me get this straight... it's one down and four up, right?
