Air Box..... do I need it?

Can I put air filters on each carb or do I need to keep using the air box? The tech at Yamaha said it's best to stick to the box, is this true? 1981 xj 650. Let me know. Thanks.
It's best to stick w/ the box - but I swapped to pod filters a while back because basically, getting the dam carbs out of that bike w/ the box on is a real PIA. (1982 xj650 seca)
I tuned up the carbs and the bike is running well - no jet kit needed. I verified this w/ an Exhaust Gas Analyzer throughout the rev reange.
You mileage may vary, all bikes are different etc etc. I would recommend that you use an EGA to tune the bike if you do swap filters - Running too lean is death for an air cooled bike.
