Measuring shocks' air pressure

The manual for the Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 doesn't recommend using a tire gauge to measure the air pressure in the shocks because leakage can affect the results. What type of gauge should one use?

how much pressure are we talking here?
there are mountain bike shock pumps that work extremely well for this type thing if its a schrader valve (same as on car and motorcycle tires) and you can get them in 0-100psi or 0-300psi. if you dont need to go over 100 psi, dont get the 300psi ones cause they are less accurate. I have one for my fork that is the 100psi style and I think it was about $15-20. it has a screw on design that loses VERY little air pressure, and a small button that you can press to lower pressure while its still attached. I know its accurate cause on my mountain bike I can feel a difference of 2-5psi. on a 700lb cruiser I dont think you would notice like on a 32lb K2....
