I am looking at a few different bikes. I have some limited time on motorcycles but a good deal of time in my life on other two wheeled motorized transportation. I have been looking at V-star 1100, C50, Shadow' of different sizes, and even Vulcan bikes. My question is related to cost. I am not woried about the up front cost of the purchase of a bike, but more on the cost of the service. I saw in a different post that V-star are about $300 for each service including the first. What are the ball park costs that you have seen. I am comfortable on all of them and I am just looking at the prices I will have to pay, so I will know what I am getting into. Also how hard is it to do the work your self. I do most of my own work on my cars and was just curious about how advisable it may be to do.

I just had my 600 mile service done yesterday on my v-star 650 and it ran me $540. However they told me the next time I need to service it will be at 4000 miles.

Wow, $540? It was $150 for my 600 mile check up on my v star 650.
The thing about V Stars is they need their valves checked at 600 miles, which makes the procedure a bit more costly.

Cost me $230 dollars for 1st service on my 650 custom. I guess it all depends on where you get the bike.

My cost will be 170 when I take it in on Friday, plus a few bucks to replace the shiter lever.
540 - sheesh. I wouldve just taken it to a private dealer if thats possible on your warranty (if you have one).

I didn't even get my 600 mile done on the SV. If you look in the service manual it's literally tighten the bolts with a torque wrench, clean the chain, change oil and filter. I did all that myself and noted it in my maintenance log.
The SV's first valve check is supposed to happen at 15k miles.

As I was filling up (I really wish I had a fuel-level instead of just the blinking symbol), I noticed that at 143miles on this run ofgas, I had exactly 1,100 miles. Surely that was a sign.
This will be my first check-up. And "officially" I will be beyond the recommended RPM restrictions.

I just got my 07 1100 V-Star Silverado back from it's 600 mile service, it cost me $58.00. They changed oil, filter and drive shaft gear oil, plus checked the bike over completely, checked the valve clearance and adjusted the carbs. It pays to buy from a good dealer.

I can remember when service (at least labor, while under warranty) was included in the price.
