Leaving to pick up my first bike in a bit. Found a killer deal on a 1999 Suzuki gs500.
Safety course scheduled for Saturday morning.
Lil nervous about the ride home.
Wish me luck.

Don't ride it home.Whytrip wrote:Picking the bike up in an hour. 9pm here in Seattle. Traffic shouldn't be too bad.
I've ridden dirt before, granted it was a million years ago, so i think I'll be okay. Believe me, if I'm unconformable I have one of my boys come ride it home for me. I think I'll be alright though.
I'm excited!
Seriously. Don't do it.
Find an experienced/licensed rider to do it for you, rent a Uhaul, find a buddy with a pickup truck, pay the owner $50 to ride it to your house for you and give him a ride back to his.
But don't ride it home yourself.
Hopping onto public streets to ride a brand new (to you) bike home when you've never ridden a street bike is one of the most stupid, dangerous things you can possibly do.
There are too many other good options to do that.

I would ask the seller to drive it home for you and then drive the seller back to the home.. The street is much scaryer than it looks, especially on a motorcycle.

Many people have also been injured and or several traffic tickets to go with the new bike. You should enjoy it when your ready. That's after your license, safety equipment and riders course.
I rode dirt bikes decades before I got back into riding. If I had not taken the riders course before riding on the street, I would have killed myself, not due to speeding, just lack of current riding skills.
If you only get one thing from this board, take a rider course like the MSF course before you ever drive a bike of any size. Its too easy to believe you still have the stills from back in the day. Dirt is also very different than street. Especially a sport bike. Your a wrist twist away from injuring yourself or someone else.
Riding safely is a dangerous hobby. To put the odds a bit more in our favor we do things like use safety equipment, take riders courses before riding and then take our rides within our level of skills. Then build slowly upon what you have learned over time.
I don't mean to rain on your bike day but I do want you to love it next month as well.
