Hello!

Here where I live in Canada, there is no learner's permit available at all. I took the MSF course about three weeks ago, and today I did my road test again, and failed, again because I stalled the bike too many times. Everyone else in the course and everyone who was tested today had their own bike already, and have clearly been practising for some time, albeit illegally. I am not even allowed to have a friend drive his bike to the course for me to practice on. What can I do? It seems like there is no alernative but to buy a bike and drive the bike without a motorcycle license for a while. I really don't want to do this, but I really want to get the license!

Any advice?

Is there any particular style of bike which would be better for the test?

sounds like you just need to work on your clutching a little bit. remember to always let it out slowly. that the only advice i can muster up being new to on road riding so i hope it helps/is correct.

Hi RC Fan - where do you live in Canada? In Ontario, all you have to do is write a written test to get your learners permit? This doesn't make sense... how can you do a roadtest without practising first? Is your MSF course mandatory??? How do things operate where you are??

Good luck, I failed the first time too, very frustrating. The school in which I took my course were really good and they let you redo the test for free, but beforehand they make you practice the test over and over again till you have it good.

I live in NB. It doesn't make any sense at all! I am not legally allowed to drive a motorcycle other than doing the road test. Honestly a lot of people here drive without a license. There was a guy about 18 there today who drove his Yamaha R6 to the class which is a big no-no. The instructor passed him though, even though he put his feet down about 10 times.

The MSF course was not mandatory.

The main dmv site for new brunswick (service new brunswick? I dunno..crazy canadians and their names!) has a PDF download that seems to imply having a regular license allows you to ride a bike without a specific permit except on the highways. I would talk to someone at the NB DMV though.

Here in PEI, you're pretty much on your own. If you have a car license, all you do is go to the DMV and pay them $5 for a permit, no testing required. It allows you to ride within 30kms of your home and ONLY during daylight hours with no passengers. It's valid for 30 days and you must take your driving test within that time frame.

As far as I know, there is no official MSF here, but if you contact the HOG(Harley Owners Group) here, they will usually arrange riding lessons free of charge, even if you don't own a Harley.

This permit that they talk about qualifies you to do the road test. It shows the driver examiner that you have passed the written test and the vision test.

I have spoken directly to the Driver Examiners office and they have confirmed I am only legally allowed to operate a motorcycle while doing the road test. I certainly appreciate you looking though. If you guys prove me wrong on this I would be really happy.

Are we the only province that does this? It is nuts!

are there any private roads nearby? its legal to drive anything without any licence on private roads. at least in the states.

I don't know how things work in New Brunswick, but what you're saying doesn't make any sense. In Ontario you can get M1 license (equivalent of learning permit) by taking a written course at the ministry. Once you pass the road test or take the MSF course, you get M2.
