So...is the consensus that it's ridiculous to wear anything other kind of helmet than full-faced?

It's not ridiculous, but you will find that most here prefer a full-face.

I don't know if its a consensus, since many people live in states or countries that require a helmet anyway. Illinois is a helmet free state and only as a guess I'd say its somewhere around 50% of the riders wear helmets because they choose to. Among those, most are full face. This is just my best guess of riding around here. So if your going to safeguard your head, then why not your face ?
This is wear getting a properly sized helmet and one with good venting comes in. Any helmet can vent well at 50 mph but how about 25 for city riding or traffic slow downs?
Just my opinions.

I personally agree with you. I and my husband Jerry, and our children will only wear a full face helmet. It is the best way to keep your head fully protected. Florida's law does not repuire a helmet over the age of 21 if you have atleast $10,000 in Medical Insurance. Since the law was repealed the death rate due to head injuries has rissen.
The motorcyclist death rate increased significantly after the law change, from 30.8 to 38.8 deaths per 1,000 crash involvements. Motorcyclist death rates increased for single- and multiple-vehicle crashes, for male and female operators, and for riders of all ages including those younger than 21. After controlling for gender and age, the likelihood of death given involvement in a motorcycle crash was 25% higher than expected after the law change.
I don't know about anyone else, but I value my teeth, jaw and the reat of my face as well. The only real protection any of us will get is from a full face helmet.

No, not really consensus. Wear whatever you want. Who cares what everybody else thinks.

I saw a picture of a guy who lost half his face because of no protection. It's my personal choice to wear a full face helmet.

Consensus of who, who are you wanting a generalization from?
Wear whatever you want (or not if there are no helmet laws in your state). To each his/her own. It is your personal choice to do your own research and make your own informed decision. We can't tell you what to do and can only offer our opinions if that is what you're looking for, what you ultimately decide is up to you.

During my first 'off' I remember watching the grave scrape across my visor as I slide forwards. I'm not the worlds prettiest guy but I'd have been a damn sight less pretty if I hadn't been wearing a full face at that moment.
