My 1982 Honda CM450 operates okay at trottle but when stopped (i.e., traffic light) and idling, it sputters and dies. The motor will restart okay and accelerates fine when given trottle. What is the possible problem and how do I fix it?

Sound like dirty carburetors to me.
Cleaning and adjusting the carbs should do the trick.

Johnj is right, clean the carbs. Pay careful attention to the pilot circuit.

Might also be the idle is set too low.

That actually might be closer to the problem than plugged up carbs. If it runs ok just above idle, then the carbs are probably ok.
