What to buy?

Hi, first time in forum hope I'm doing this right?? I rode dirt bikes as a kid and now I'm looking for a CHEAP motorcycle to ride to work about 25 miles one way on interstate. My first thought was a 250 Rebel and now I don't know if that's enough power for a interstate? I'm 5'6 and 125 pds and want to feel I can handle... I was thinking a cruiser simply because the Ninja type bikes look uncomfortable with their legs cocked back behind them?? I'm looking at spending around $1500 or less...any suggestions? I live in Tennessee and don't have the first clue either about what is allowed when testing buying or getting motorcycle license either!

Welcome aboard! Tennessee's website for their department of motor vehicles should be able to answer your licensing questions. Usually it's... study a handbook for motorcycling, take written test, and obtain learner's permit. Then, either practice on a motorcycle and take a practical test for licensing OR take a safety course, such as the MSF basic riders course, and take their test to receive a certificate of completion (and then you can usually get your license with that certificate in hand). Call and make sure though - every state is a bit different.
As far as bikes... check out our "sticky" thread in the New Riders Forum regarding first time bikes. You'd probably do well with any 500cc - 750cc cruiser.
Enjoy the forums!
Cheers,
Loonette

Don't exclude the Ninja because of it's looks. I truly thought I would be a Harley girl when I started out then I actually sat on some bikes at the dealers and realized I was a sportbike kinda girl after all. I got a Ninja Ex500 (used) for my first bike and found it to be very comfortable...I felt weird sitting on cruisers. Good luck, and do try to take the MSF/BRC in your area...it will help inspire confidence and it will help you get your license.

+1 on not discrediting the Ninja250 or 500. You say "ninja type bikes" so I'm guessing you're lumping all the sporty looking bikes with plastic together. The 250 and 500 are actually what they call standards and your legs are pretty much straight below you.
If nothing else just sit on one at the dealership and see how it feels to your body.
You're probably right that a rebel 250 won't be that good on the freeway. But there are plenty of other bikes of all types in the low cc/hp range that will go wonderfully on the interstate.

Hello, and welcome! I got a Yamaha Virago 535 for 1500$, and I love it! Easy to handle, and has plenty of power. Good luck
