Trouble with 1st Gear - Vulcan 500 LTD

I have 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD and it doesn't want to go into first gear. It now has 256 miles on it and I bought it last week with 123 miles.
Sometimes I can get it to go into first by letting the clutch out a little but more often then not it just doesn't want to go. Is this something that will go away as more miles are added or is it something I should be worried about?

Can you be more specific on when it happens....ie, bike is cold at start-up, during the ride when bike is warm...?
A bike that young, I'd try an oil change and be sure the clutch cable is adjusted right.

Thanks for replying. It does it after two or three miles and the engine has warmed. Going down into first is the only problem. It shifts through all the other gears just fine.
I was thinking about getting the oil changed. Even though the mileage is low, it is still a year old and hasn't had the oil changed yet.

Is it happening while moving or at a stop?
Edit: Definitely change the oil. NOW.

I think that is a very good idea. I'm going to do it ASAP. Thanks for the advice.
