I have a 1997 Suzuki Marauder with stock mufflers and I am trying to take them off to put on my new cobra slip on pipe. I loosened all of the bolts and took off the clamps but I can’t get them to budge. I took a screwdriver and tried to wedge it between where the muffler meets the head pipe and all it would do was dig into the metal. The pipes are not welded to my knowledge and they have never been taken off. Also the two muffler connect to each other so they have to come off together which I think makes it a little harder. I don’t know if they are rusted or fused on their from age or if I am just forgetting to do something. Anyone that can help me at all please do, I am getting so frustrated and I don’t know what else to do. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Also, try oil to loosen the fit as some of the metric cruisers have a very tight fit from the factory. At Wal-Mart I also found can grippers (rubber pads about the size of a wash rag) that are wonderful for pulling pipes as they never leave a scratch.

That link gave me some new ideas but nothing has worked yet. I have soaked where the mufflers meet the head pipe with PB Blast but they still will not budge. Ive been told to use a torch and heat the pipes up utill they turn red and they should slip right off. I havent tried it yet but that would be awesome if it worked. I did notice some that in between where the muffler slips onto the head pipe there is steel wool or something like it helping to keep the pipe on. Is this normal? Anymore ideas would be great I really want to get these bad boys off. Thanks for all help.

When you heat something up don't take it til it's red hot. The idea is to heat up the part you need to expand because heat makes metal expand. Obviously you want to heat up the one part more than the other. If you just sit there with a torch you can end up heating the part you don't want to heat up if possible too much and still not be able to get it off.

Another reason I'd be careful is when metal gets red hot it gets soft and you can do damage. Take your time.

Sometimes letting penetrating fluid sink in over night helps.

If you havnt gotten them off yet, start the bike and let it wam up to OP temp. Then try removing them with the pipes hot. Of couse wear some gloves while doing this.

Liquid Wrench???
