alright i see no point in getting a official bike lock cable...so im thinking go to hardware store...get chain and lock...and works just as great....if u all have a cheaper/better option then please tell me...

how long should i get the chain?

Where do u all put ur bike locks when ur not useing them?

I could be wrong in this...... but bike locks are designed really tough to cut or break, which is definately an upside.

Its easy enough to find some really tough chain and a lock anyway though so the only thing I can say is, most bike chains youll want to have some sort of cover on, not just the metal or itll scratch up your bike. So maybe just find some nice way of covering the chain?

1. Uhh long enough to get it around a lamp post, short enough to fit in the underseat storage

Ohh +1 on covering the chain too, best bet I can think of is probably find an old waterproof coat and cut a section out of it to sew into a tube to run the chain through

Bike specific locks and other expensive locks are made of hardened steel, which is much harder to cut.

You can cover a chain with vinyl tubing if you can find it wide enough. Otherwise you can use old bicycle inner tubes for 20"/26" bikes. A bicycle shop should give these to you for free.
