Turn Signal Problem (electrical?)

I need help.
My left turn signal will not work (although my right one will and seems brighter than normal).
All of the bulbs are OK.
The flasher and the wires at the flasher get pretty hot when trying either turn signal.
When trying the left turn signal, the turn signal does not work but it makes the head light and neutral light flash a little instead.
I switched out the flasher (part #F550) for one I got at the car parts place part #550 which I was told would work. When I put it in and try either turn signal, the fuse quickly burns out so ther must be some difference to them.
The original flasher is crunched a little bit and has been for some time but use to work like that anyway.
I had this problem a couple of years ago when I had to pull the tank off to fix a leak. I fooled around with the wires (moving them around) because I suspected a short. The problem went away. I don't know if moving the wires is what did it.
I suspect a short somewhere. I have tried moving various wire around so that maybe the problem would disapear but I am not so lucky this time.
But I am also not convinced that the problem is not in the flasher.
Any advice?
