"Minimal" insurance coverage isn't ...

the good idea it seems. Yeah, it saves big money up front, if nothing ever happens... the thing is, on a motorcycle IF something happens, the result is more likely to be more expensive than you ever imagined.
I have a friend who's bike is paid for, so he didn't need comprehensive coverage (or medical, but that's another issue). He has a bunch of touring mods on his bike, many of them a season or less old.
Well, he got rear-ended by a kid in an SUV. (The bike is a write off as well - I saw it, the rear wheel doesn't even RESEMBLE a wheel, except for the tire wrapped around it.) He is physically okay (mostly), but it is amazing that he walked away.
The thing is since the crash is obviously the SUV's fault, the SUV driver's insurance is dragging their feet and refusing to pay one cent over blue book value of the bike. Claiming that virtually none of the modifications add any value to it.
Now, if my friend had had SOME amount of comprehensive coverage, and his insurer then had to pay to replace those items, THEY'd be going to bat to get the other company to pay up. Instead of leaving him to fend for himself.
Also just learned that State Farm insurance full coverage probably does not include ANY medical coverage... Progressive paid the first $1000 of my medical costs when I wrecked last July.

I've got full coverage, at least as far as bikes go, through American Family for $233 a year. Standard deductible. Granted I'm over 30 and also have car and homeowners through them to get somewhat of a break, but after hearing some stories of insurance costs I was pleasantly surprised. This is on an 05 FZ6. I priced it last year and a brand new YZF600r was still only going to run me 50 a month. Alas, my insurance does not cover medical however.
In my mind it seems that full coverage just goes with owning a vehicle of any sort. If you set a limit for a monthly payment, do chew it all up on the bike since there are other expenses, gas and insurance to go with it. I can't imagine riding without knowing I have full coverage.

Always read the policy and get these details squared away first. It always pays to understand what you're buying.

i decided not to cover my bike. i dont have a loan for it, i got it cheap. the insurance by the month/year, would end up costing what i paid for the bike in maybe 2 years. so rather than basically re-buying my bike every 2 years ill just live with it if something happens and wait 2 years to get a new bike(in theory). but of course my mentality with this bike is ride it and let what happens to happen. i had a bike before i tried to really baby and it ended up totald so...
if i had a new bike then things would be different.

But isn't that what standard medical insurance is for? I mean having the extra medical is nice but your regular medical insurance should cover any expenses from your injuries minus your co-pays. Am I mistaken about this?

Not everyone has standard medical insurance.

I don't, that's for sure.
But, on the plus side, full coverage, medical, comp, collision, and all that costs me less than $300 for a 12-month policy.

Aahh. Well that is a good reason to need medical coverage on your bike insurance. The medical was never a deal breaker for me because, at least since I've been working in the "real world" the last few years, I've had medical insurance.
Now for that ten year period from when I was 20 to 30, that would've been a different story. Ah, the good old days.
