After riding a lot at night, I have stopped at quite a few street lights that I can not trigger to give me the go ahead. I try to flash my brights, but that has not worked for me once. I try to spot road sensors before the crosswalk, but it's harder to see at night and I try to pay attention to my braking. One night I waited at a light for about five minutes even with a car stopped behind me and it still failed to activate. Eventually I give up and make a right turn on red, but I would like to know anyone's secret for getting the green. Anyone have this problem also?

I had that problem...then I picked up a big ol' H-D Electra Glide Classic.

I had that problem once. DH was in the truck behind me. He just hopped off and pushed the crosswalk button. I suppose you could do that, but it might get a bit redundant

Sometimes you can just wait for 5 min. then make sure there's no cars coming and just go.

Some other things to try are:

Finding a raised area on the road which may contain the sensor and just ride on top of it.

Carrying extra metallic items and ride up to the crosswalk.

Ride on to the crosswalk and put the sidestand down, or shut off the engine and turn it back on again, or both.

Buy one of those green light trippers I keep seeing in the magazines.

Another thing, get off bike and walk over and push crosswalk button.

The ones in NYC aren't actually wired or the wires are not connected. We found this out after I tried to use one and the green cap fell off. I've seen this all over Manhattan as I'm walking.

I know the ones in Long Island seem to work.

I sometimes have that problem with lights. Some lights will change when i stop on the sensor but some others won't change at all. I just use best my best judgment to run the red light after i sit there for a couple minutes with no traffic passing whatsoever.

The solution is obviously to keep drinking beer until your gut alone is enough to activate the sensors.

Around here if you have a problem tripping a light you can call and a technician will usually be out there the next day to change the sensitivity.
