Over $3 million in Harleys?

I spent last week flying and camping at out of the way airstrips in Montana with some friends. When we dropped into a remote airstrip in Seeley Lake, MT, we were advised that the airport would be closed in the morning because several hundred Harleys would be stopping by to have their picture taken on the runway.

Turns out that there's some sort of cross-country Harley ride (I heard Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon) with about 500 Harley owners doing all or part of the trip.

Early the next morning, they started filing through the airport fence. One of the guys in our group was counting and made it to 275 before he gave up. Almost every one was fully decked out in Harley add ons. Some of us started wondering how much money was invested in that huge pile of motorcycle metal and plastic. Feel free to make your own guess.

As an aside, I noticed that most participants were on the downhill side of forty. I asked one of the organizers about the demographics of the group. She said just over 500 owners had registered for the ride and only 3 or 4 of them were under the age of 35.

Hmmm... I'm surprised you were allowed to take a picture, as us Harley riders don't allow outsiders into the fold, much less observe our rituals. That was a very unauthourised peek into the "lifestyle", you weren't supposed to be able to do that. I had to report this to the Harley High Command... there's some big biker types on their way to see you now. They're all over 40 so it'll take them awhile to get there, but boy are you ever gonna get it when they do!

Sorry, dude, but I had to do it. Its the "code" that all Harley riders are sworn to uphold and to live by.

That strip looks like an ultra light field. What do you fly?

Q: What do Harley's and Hound Dogs have in common?

A: Both prefer to ride in the back of a pick up truck then to move under their own power.......

Oh boy, am I ever gonna pay for that one.

Ultra light field? That's a 4500 ft. long grass strip. You can just see the wingtip of my Cherokee 180 in the foreground of the pic.

Yeah, not a lot of 20 somethings can afford a $20,000 luxury piece of butt-jewelry.

Yeah..that explains why they're doing a cross-country ride while you're on a forum talking trash.

I would imagine that the average person would need to be retired or self employed to have the time to make this trip. I don't know many retired folks under 35 years of age.

Anyhow, I wish I had the free time to make this trip....... on any bike.
