Fork lock probelms on '01 ninja 500

I got a used 2001 ninja 500 and it runs relatively fine. However, when i go to lock the handlebars, I turn left and turn the key to the "p" on the right. When i go to unlock it it tends to stick. After a while it comes undone but today I had put some lubricant in the ignition. When i went to unlock my bars it happened after a little jolt but the key came out in the "on" position.

Anything I can do to solve this problem without going to a mechanic?
