Zen and the art of motorcycle repair?

The problem is I know almost as much about motorcycle repair as I do about Zen.
First problem. I'm not what I would consider mechanically inclined where it comes to machines. Now computers are another matter, but if it has a motor I'm at sea. Second problem is I don't have a garage, so I'm probably not going to be doing any major repairs or maintenance in the parking lot of my apartment.
So what should I be able to do on my own, and how can I learn to identify potential problems? Is there a course on motorcycle maintenance for the mechanically inept? Or maybe a Motorcycle Maintenance for Dummies book, they have one for everything else...
Any pointers in the right direction towards competent riderhood are appreciated.
