oil in air filter

Sorry I know this has probably been talked about before but I wasn't sure how to search it properly. Took my air filter out last night to clean it and found 1/2 cup of oil in the bottom of my air cleaner compartment. The air cleaner itself had some oil on it as well. I suspect its getting in from the breather tube. How and why? I'm hoping its a common problem but not a big problem.

What kind of bike? And how old?

Blowby from the piston rings can shove oil into the airbox. Overfilling the oil can cause oil to end up in the airbox. Sometimes there is a little valve that makes sure the oil stays in the crankcase, but the air gets out, that can break and you'll end up with oil in the airbox.

Sorry about that. 83 honda 650 nighthawk. About 60,000 klicks. Runs really smooth although my mpg seems to have dropped a bit.

I am not sure about your year, but most Honda's have a drain tube from the air cleaner, exiting under the bike. There is a plug in the tube that prevents the engine from getting unfiltered air into it. When there is about an inch or two of liquid in the line, you should drain it. IF you haven't drained it, that may explain the oil/liquid in the air filter. A wet airfilter will cut your fuel mileage.

Remember to put the plug back after draining. Otherwise the tube will allow unfiltered air into the engine..
