Hey all,

I just put down a deposit for a 1978 GS550, and i'm gonna be picking it up on Monday or Tuesday. Hooray first bike! (MSF BRC passed, M1 license acquired)

:D

The downside is, there are a few things I need to get for it before I'm really happy...

First, I need (want) the left side battery box cover, but that's easy, i'll just keep an eye on eBay (and there are quite a few bike junkyards around here).

Second, and a bit more importantly, I need (yeah, really need this time) a new headlight. The one in there is cracked. Functional, but cracked. ...and kinda dim for my taste.

So... does anybody know where I can get a replacement headlamp, OR, get a easy replacement headlamp conversion (sealed beam to bulb-in-housing) and what bloody kind of lamp it is. e.g. 50/60 12v 8 inch three pin sealed beam, etc. If it were a car, I'd just go to sylvania.com, and it's easypeasy, but bikes seem to be a bit different.

When I first got my old GS550 home I slipped in the garage and the bike started to go down. I caught it but the headlight fell out and shattered.

I bought a replacement headlight from www.Z1enterprises.com along with a set of carb rebuild kits. The headlight was a sealed beam but it fit right into the old plug with no problems.

You may want to think about cleaning the carbs sometime soon.

A good helpful group (hate to mention another forum but it's for a GSer) is www.gsresources.com

They have a helpful forum and a bunch of guides on how to do stuff, they have a very well made and thorough guide for cleaning the carbs on a GS.

Congratz on the GS! Don't ever give her up, I've been regretting selling mine since day one.

awesome.

thanks for the info!!!

based on your z1 link, they're outta the 7" round lights btw, i found some 7" round conversion kits, so I'm not stuck with a sealed beam - i can get h4's and use em in the new housing.

second, the link for GSResources is: http://www.thegsresources.com/

if you forget the 'The' it takes you to a spam links page.

...i'm so excited! one or two more days. tick-tock, tick-tock...
