So, I went out to the ocean and it was a fun ride but it raised a lot of questions like:

How do you stop the wind from blowing on your neck when you ride? I ride a dualsport and at higher speeds the windshield doesn't offer much protection unless I go into a sportbike crouch.

My polarized sunglasses make my visor look like a laser light show, for some reason they make it all rainbow colored and that's kinda distracting. Why is this happening and what can I do to prevent it?

Ok, this happened once on my way back and scared me more than a little. I was making a left hand turn and saw a big truck coming my way in the other lane. I made the turn but felt like I was going to turn too tightly and hit it, what do you guys suggest to get over that feeling?

I would suggest looking where you want to go instead of directly at the truck you were trying to avoid, which I would bet money is what you did.

Try a bandana. That's what I use for the small portion of my neck that's exposed when it's cold or rainy. There are also neck protectors around. I've seen them at bike shows and online occassionally.

Sorry, no suggestion for the rainbow effect. I've never experienced that type of thing.

Wearing polarized lenses under the shield can be dangerous, because of the very issue you mention. Polarized lenses allow through only the light waves that are oriented in one specific direction. If the light is first being refracted by anything else - like oil slick on the road, the very slight lensing of a shield, etc, you'll get that rainbow effect which, as you say, is distracting.

slightly off topic: if you take the out the two lenses from a pair of polarized shades and hold one against of the other but one of them rotated 90 degrees, no light gets through. Makes sense, as the first lens filters out everything but the vertical waves (for example) and the second will then filter out those vertical waves. Add a third polarized lens, and suddenly light is coming through. Spooky. Simple demonstration of quantum mechanics and how light, at one level, doesn't really travel in a straight line and instead follows only probabilistic paths.

about those oil slicks. It's kinda funny because that rainbow thing makes them easier to spot and kinda reminds me of a heads up display from a video game. Like somebody just highlighted them for me.

Go with a tinted shield, problem solved. I have the same problem if I wear my glasses with a clear screen. Also some shields accentuate the effect more than others, so next time you buy a helmet try it with your glasses on and go outside if you can.

I say that because I recently discovered this as my new helmet is much worse in this regard than my old one.

As for the left turn, truck, big, ouch, thing. Take a quick look to make sure the truck is not going to move, then stop looking at it and concentrate on the turn and where you want to go.

I've had that rainbow show with polarized glasses before too.

Now though i have to go buy 3 pairs of polarized glasses. grrrr.

Only if you're planning on driving probabilitic routes. Be sure to clean to bose-einstein condensate off of your face shield afterward though.
