Hey, I know for a fact you've been around here a little bit before. So I think you know our response to your question... I'll pitch in the first resounding NO as to a first bike being a supersport. Seriously, check out the GS500 or if you NEED a 600cc I4 for a first bike, then go for the Katana... but not a supersport. Like I've told others here, I'm 6'2" and 300 lbs. Every 600cc I4 I've ridden has quite literally surprised me and wanted to take off without me. Heck, I rode a Yamaha FZ6 on a quarter mile stretch of road. It's a detuned version of the R6 with a higher seating position and less plastic (read: less powerful and less aerodynamic) and I still got it up to over 100 MPH on that stretch...

First bike
This may not be the place to ask but im looking at some learner bikes which havent been listed in these forums (or atleast i havent seen them around). There is alot of hype about the 250 ninjas and the GS 500 bikes but none about Hondas or Yamahas.
A few bikes i have my eye on are:
Kawasaki ZX2R (ninja)
Kawasaki ZXR 250 (ninja again)
Kawasaki ZZR 250 (similar to a ninja)
Honda CBR 250 (Fireblade)
Yamaha FZR 400
Some of these bikes may be different as i live in Australia, but im wondering which of these bikes would be the go for a first, and also if anyone could tell me about those Honda CBR 250's that would be great.

Honda CBR250s are great bikes. There are several versions...the R and the RR. The difference is dual disc vs single and...mmm, maybe a couple horses. I can't exactly remember. Any of the Honda VT..VTZ...VFR...CB is going offer great bikes in the 250-400 range that would suit a new rider. Also look at the Hornet 250 and last but not least, a VTR250
With Suzuki you can pick up a GSX250 or Bandit 200 or 400.
If I were you I'd stay away from any 2stroke 250 you run across. While a 250, they are a little wild. But, try your hand if you wish.
I live in Japan, land of the bestest small bike selection

Thing is somewhere around 100HP, so I'm gonna say it might not be the BEST to work out on
All i can say is that these CBR's seem really damn powerful for a 250, thanks for the advice "ANDS!". Now im starting to question whether or not i should get one because these seem like a bit of a wicked bike. Hopefully they would be slightly more forgiving in the bottom revs like the ninjas are though. Also look at the Hornet 250 and last but not least, a VTR250
I have also had a look at the Honda VTR 250 and they look like a neat little package too. The price however is a fair bit more than their sportier counter-parts, the CBR's (second hand). Im not sure about other countries but our bikes arent cheap ... im lucky to find a good second hand Ninja / CBR / VTR for under about AU$4000 to AU$5000. Its pretty dear for my stupid first year apprentice wages ... but what can you do eh?
Now all else i can say is that i hope that i figured out this damn quoting system out ... and thanks for the advice fellers

The CBR250R(RR) are definitely enough but not too much for a first year rider. You can do quite a bit with them, and they rev pretty high for you folks that like screamers (Inline 4 redline I think around 18), they are light, get decent mileage and are easy to handle. I also think they're one of the best looking sportbike 250s on the market and the its unfortunate the US never got them.
The 250s I mentioned you'd want to kinda look away from are the 2strokes like the Yamaha TZR250 or Honda NSR250. They are good track bikes for guys dedicated to having a stable to choose from. But they require more maintenance as they are 2stroke. You want to take all that stuff out of the way for now.
As for the VTR250, I ride one. Its a Vtwin, great bike to run around on. Comfy seat with a fairly neutral seating position. Aftermarket is picking up for it and you can buy rearsets, clip ons, exhausts....I've seen some great customized ones here in JPN.
Anyway, have fun choosing
Edit: Nick, "ANDs!" was not referring to the CBR250RR as being a 100hp bike. A CBR250RR is listed as just under 40HP which is ideal for a new rider and a first bike.
