Why have more than one helmet?

While I was researching helmet purchasing, I noticed that some people have more than one helmet. Is there any reason for this? Just for safe measure or what? I ask this, because I just bought an HJC AC-12 Carbon helmet, however I'm considering getting a second helmet for when I go on short trips (to say the theater, 2 miles away) and need to leave the helmet on the helmet lock of the bike, I don't want my expensive helmet to get messed up.

I like having a couple of helmets to chose from, and I buy a new one every year or two.

If I had the spare cash I would like to have a second helmet as back up just in case something were to happen to my current helmet.
It would be a shame to miss a few good days of riding while I had to wait for a new helmet to arrive.

I have an all around helmet- Scorpion EXO 700
A passenger helmet setup with my comm system
A winter helmet (fits better with a balaclava under it)
I also have a helmet for teaching classes- 3/4 HJC that I only use in the parking lot and don't care too much if it gets tossed around

I found another helmet that fit better then my first. Now I have two.
I may buy a third for Christmas because I adore the graphics on it. No other reason. I just really like the graphics. However with summer running around and sweating I can see washing liners and helmets drying. I wear a bandanna myself and don't sweat into my helmet, but I can see it happen.

I have two helmets, a green flashy one and a solid black one. I bought it so it can match the different gear I have, (twisty gear (all black), and commuting gear (black/grey) and a neon yellow reflective vest).
Also I don't buy the ultra expensive Arai or Shoei helmets because I simply don't have a reason to spend that much for one. I own two HJCs CL-SP helmets which are fairly cheap at under $200.

I have both an HJC and pricey Arai. The Arai vents better, fits better and defogs nicely, but the HJC has much less wind noise (maybe from having less vent structures?)

I've got my "regular" full face (Arai) and my "Range" helmet - for teaching the MSF.
Don't give rides unless a prospective passenger has their OWN helmet. Not worth the risk of a poor fit (having ONE pillion helmet) resulting in serious injury.
