I am 21 going into the motorcycle job catogery. I will forced to buy thousands in tools I hear? Is this true and if so I have been hearing snap- on has it but way too much am I looking to buy tool by tool or am I going to have to find a set. KL? Anyone have a idea on the price for all this.

First off, where do you live? If in the States or Canada, Craftsman tools are good enough for the job and won't totally break the bank. Warranty replacement on them is as simple as walking into Sears, the same goes for the higher end Mastercraft tools from Cambodia Tire. As you get along in your career, you may want to invest in Snap-on, but I'd wait on it if I were you.

Have to second that ..... more important than the brand is knowing how to use them properly.

What you may find is that you will need to acquire specialty tools that may only be available from the OEM's (if you are working for one) or companies like Snap-on or Mac (if you are working as an independent).

An interesting tid bit ..... Most don't know this .... but the majority of Craftsman branded hand tools tools are made for Sears by Electrolux .... yes the vacuum people. Electrolux has been making Craftsman tools forever. They are a multi-billion dollar company.

IF it's anything like being a car mechanic, my room mate tells me alot of guys start out with the minimum craftsman set that they can get away with and borrow things as needed. However, most guys will only let you borrow something x many times, so you'll eventually need to borrow that tool, but it's not like you need to have absolutely everything to get going.

Are you going to school for this? If so, they would know best... or Sev would know

A lot of times snap on mac and matco will offer a discount for students. They did for us here in GA anyway. I have found that some of the craftsman stuff will work for a professional mechanic, but some will be thrown away in a week. I would stay away from cheap ratchets, they will brake with the amount of work a professional will be doing.

Basically, snap on is MUCH better then other low end brands, but you can definitely get away with SOME cheaper stuff.

Oh, if a snap on or mac etc. man comes to your work place then replacing tools is as easy as going to work and walking on the truck. Much better then driving to sears. That is if one comes to your work place.

Maybe look into craftsman professional tools. I never tried them but hear they are ok quality.

Gotta love snap on. My room mate has essentially all snap on tools. His tool chest is as long as my jeep and just as high, and he has two additional cabinets. He almost has it all paid off only another 8 grand to go.

If you're entering a training school, I imagine you'll get a killer deal on tools thru the school. Just as a culinary student gets a deal on knives and a college student gets a deal on a laptop.

And as med students are forced to buy a $2000 non name brand laptop with reliability issues due to the contract the school has with the company.

Just got outta school and dropped about 3 grand on mastercraft tools and a tool box. Canadian anyways...

Mastercraft is using the older snapon molds now-a-days, high quality - life time warranty and all that jazz.
