Well folks, the final diagnosis is in. The identified problem with my Triumph Trophy 1200 is a faulty pickup coil, not the ECU as I had been worried about. Not covered under the emissions warranty, but relatively cheap and easy to fix all the same.

Note to parsley1938:

This is something anybody can fix by themselves. Check out this page as a reference:

Basically, the part is about $75 from a dealer here in the states. I've been told that you can find them even a little cheaper in the UK (30-something pounds?). To replace, simply remove the right fairing. There is a cover on the right side of the engine that, when removed will resemble the picture in the link. Find the pickup coil (it should look just like the new one), undo the screws and the plug, replace, and put it all back together.. There might be some kind of air gap that needs to be maintained between the coil and whatever is on the crankshaft. Basically, space it the same as the one that came off.

Good luck.

My God! could this be an end to it all?? Does this mean I can get rid of the neck brace and seel reinforced jacket to couteract the juddering? Thanks for all the info, its been a great help, and also nice knowing that someone else is having the same problems, takes away that feeling that its a personal jinx, heres me thinking I must have been Ghengis Khan in a previous life...
Many thanks again, I shall update you when I change the offending part! Dave
