Yo guys, quick question.....

when i bought my 78 xs400, the seller told me that a 1980 engine was put in (he gave me the original 78 engine as well), my question tho, is there a way to make certain its a 1980 engine? That way its ezier to order parts for it. I can see a 10-15 digit number on the engine, im just wondering if yamaha can tell me what year its from.

Any advice guys? thanks alot

Yes they can tell what year the bike or engine is, from the number. My Kawasaki manual has the information in it.

If you have the original engine, you'll notice the numbers should be the same as the frame/VIN number. Yamaha only stopped using matched pairs a couple of years ago (forget when exactly)
That means the 1980 engine will have 1980 numbers, which means any half decent Yamaha dealer/parts person can tell you exactly what you have
