Hello every bods I've been rebuilding my GS550e and have got to the end of the build and took something apart and found that I have a bolt left now this might not sound unfimilar but it looks important with a No.4 on the end about 10mm short about 15mm long clean with engine oil on it like it was in somewhere,I can picture most if not all of the rebuild but cannot place where this little bugger should be,Anyone who could awnser gets a fiver in the post!

Oh sure, that's the one bolt that goes right in the center of the entire engine and holds everything else together. That one. Easy.....
Have you got any other, slightly more specific info on even a best guess general location? 'It's got oil on it' is less than optimal, eh.
I hope it's not your drain plug.

Years ago when I used vicegrips and hammers to work on my junk I often had stuff left over. If it ran and seem to work ok I went with it. I don't think I would be quite so relaxed about it today. Who knows what that bolt is. I think all you can do is go slowly over the areas that you took apart in all likely hood you will see a spot for it. Good luck.

I had put the two cases together and side cases, turned the engine over and without the head or barrels on was doing something and put the bolt on a plastic tub saying to myself must put this together including that bolt and am impaitent enough to put the rest together as everything needs fitting but still have the bolt as with many of you know the engine that is working on inch by inch but no matter with book or inspection can find its home,I've taken some pictures of this little fella and am going to put them on this forum so as to help identify!

Since your engine is full of small bolts, it is funny you wonder why no one else knows where it goes.
SInce you can't figure it out, maybe we can offer clues. If it has oil on it, it is probably from the crankcase. A short bolt probably holds something thin. Maybe oil pump housing, or pickup?
I suggest you either disassemble the engine and check, or leave it out and run the motor and see it it destroys itself. If it doesn't destroy itself, it wasn't needed.
There you go....

Fantastic! the thrad is 20mm flanged with a no.4 on the end all the sump bolts and casing bolts have a no.7 and all the cam guide caps no. 6 is there a refrence book that tells where these sort of go and as for small holes,Its better than falling in...

grade 4 bolt is low tensile/low torque application.
That doesn't mean its unimportant.
There are a couple about that length holding gearchange drum (the selector pawls plate) behind clutch basket and maybe top cam chain guide wheel, although I think they are around 25~30mm long.
I think the cam cap bolts are 9, you have them upside down

PS, can I have my fiver now?

I built a 175mph 620cc conversion GS550E back in 1980 to go production racing
