mufflers and inspections

I live in new york state and recently took the MSF 3 day course. At that, the instructor said it was now illegal for bike shops to pass an inspection if the bike didn't have mufflers comparable to the stock ones!! The shop would be fined if caught doing this. Has anyone heard anything more about this and should shed some light on the topic?

They use decibal testers here, if the pipe is too loud then they aren't allowed pass inspection. Cops can also give fines but I have yet to hear of anyone getting one. This is the first year they began testing.

I got a custom slip on exhaust put om my bike. The guy who did it set up my old muffler so I could swap them and bolt it on myself rather easily before an inspection.
Not a bad idea.

Here in Tx. there is no noise limit as long as there is some type of muffler on the bike.

You guys are lucky... Now in Denver CO, if they don't have stock pipes, you can get your bike impounded... Caught 3 times (I think) and they confiscate it...

How well do the cops know bikes? Couldn't you just claim it was stock? You would think they would they would crack down on cell phones or something dangerous.. but they hassle the ones who make a little noise.

The motorcycle cops are fairly prevalent...

Other than that, most of the cops around here can tell aftermarket pipes because of all the military squids going around revving the crap outta their motors... I had a guy who lived behind me before I moved who did the typical squid thing...
1. Start up bike
2. Quickly rev bike to 10K then back to idle
3. Repeat 4-5 times
4. Take off down the street attempting to do wheelie, maintaining minimum of 8K RPM

They also rev at every stoplight and redline it going down ANY street.
That's why they made that law, because it was getting old.

To all of the military members here, sorry, I'm just used to the typical army squid who rides in his tshirt (optional), sunglasses, shorts, and sandals...

That's what it's like in my neighborhood as well, probably sans the soldiers though.

I want to have quiet pipes but sometimes I think it's not necessary. I want to be able to have a LOUD bike sometimes, but I don't want it to be screaming when I'm just cruising around town at 35 MPH.
