Goodness, its been one thing after another with this 83 interceptor. First the thing kept dying on the idle, then I thought the electrical system was screwed up. Now - the lastest problem difficult to get out of first gear. But I think I know the answer. The bike's neutral light used to come on when I fully engaged the clutch. Now I have to physcially gear it into N for the light to come on - hence the problems getting it to turn with just the clutch pulled in. Plus the play on the clutch is terrible. The clutch grabs fine, in fact when Im in first and the clutch is fully disengaed the bike will go a steady 3 miles per hour unless I hold it in with the brake. Is there a way to tighten the clutch lever?

That bike has a hydraulic clutch right? Have you checked the fluid?

At the clutch lever. Either it has a hydraulic hose connected to it, or its cable run.

If its hydraulic, the reservoir is right there on the bar, looks like a near mirror image of the brake lever and reservoir on the other side of the handlebar.

Get a repair manual if you do not have one.
