Hi, Im new to this forum and thought I would try this section of the forum. I have a nice 1982 Honda GL500 Interstate with 7500 miles. Am getting an awful grinding noise and vibration form what I think is the u-joint at the front of the drive shaft. Is there an easy service/replacement procedure I can do, or should I take it to a dealer. It's at the point I'm afraid to ride the bike for fear of driveshaft failure whhile on the road. Thanx.

Don't know about Wings, but on a bm,w Paralever only accepted fix is to replace driveshaft. BMW uses swedge type u-joints that cannot be replaced. There is a way to use ATV u joints but requires welding and machining. The paralever driveshafts last about 40K. and cost arround $400 (in 99)

Thanks for the info. Do you know how much of a job this is and if a guy could do it in his garage?

I was able to do mine but it's a BMW. (Single side para) It was easy to get apart, reassembly was another story. Almost impossible w/o two people. Best to check your manual and see procedure for Wing. Also check and see if any special tools needed. (with BMW you also need to change the bolts on shaft each time it is pulled) Also check some of the Gold Wing sites, like GWRRA. If you do not feel confident don't do it your self, It all really depends on your mechanical ability and tools you own.

The CX is stupidly easy, even more than BMW. First though, check the lock bolt istn loose/missing. You only need to pull back the rubber bellows at pivot end and rotate rear wheel to see it (with bike on center stand)
