Hi,

I just got my first bike (82 Yamaha Maxim 650) and everything was running just fine until the last week or so. Starting up has become a problem. When I hit the ignition it starts up right away just fine but then shuts off immediately. Pulling the throttle does nothing to change this, and after it shuts off it takes a lot of effort to get it started again. The engine sounds like its turning over still but as if there is no more fuel. The battery is now mostly dead from trying to start the thing up, the odd thing is, once it starts if I ride around and make stops at places for the rest of the day there is no problem starting up again until the next day.

My guess is the carbs are dirty, but as this is my first bike I'm really just taking a shot in the dark. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

-Matt

Sounds like clogged enrichment ports.....
A good carb cleaning will do wonders....
If the ports in toe carb bowl that feed the enrichment tube is clogged, then you can use full choke on a cold start and get nothing.....

Clean the carbs up good, double check the ports in the bowls, they clog easily, clean all the jets up while you're in there and you should be good...
Adding an inline fuel filter is a good idea as well, keey crap from getting in there to clog up the works

Stupid question,
are you choking it when you try to start it?

Does it have a vaccuum hose to the fuel petcock?? If so, is the line free of weather cracks???
