Wave to bikes while driving a car?

This morning I was really tired coming home (driving a car). Out of habit I tried to wave to an oncoming bike and smashed my fingers into the window.

Stupid cager.

I've gotten waves from cars, usually from people who are obviously bikers when they're not contained.

I get waves from people in cars sometimes, but I think most of them know who I am, or at least I think I know who they are.

Other than that, it's usually just little kids or something, who I always wave back to.

I do it everyday, and they wave back. Small towns, eh.
In a cage, the trick is to lift your hand off the wheel and towards the windshield, not to the side like on a bike. It is easier for them to see the wave that way.

I caught myself doing it today and before I could manage to hide my hand, my wife saw it and started laughing hard... U see, I've been riding for a month - first bike - and she thinks I am just going nuts... Come to think about it, I guess I am!

I've thought about doing it...
One of the things that I noticed today is that guys on harleys and other cruisers are a LOT less likely to wave at me now that I'm out on a sportbikish type ride. Jerks!

welcome to the club. my last bike was a big cruiser and i got waves from everyone now on the katana its rare for cruisers to aknowledge me. and sport bikes just dont care about anyone else(so it seems).
i find making eye contact before waving helps them relate that your not just some punk on a crotch rocket.
