Lowered R6 problems

I've been riding my R6 for about 2 1/2 months now. It was lowered by be previous owner. A riding buddy of mine said maybe up to 3 1/2 in the back and almost as much in the front. To add to that the guy at the shop told me my steering was loose because the bearings need to be replaced(expensive). He said there is a cheap fix to it for now, but it will eventualy need to be fixed. I just wanted to know how much I should expect to pay for this or if its something I could do on my own. I would end up paying over 1,100 if I just gave it to the shop I think.
