Twist-Grip Clutch

#1 Unread post by TMcMahon51 »

Has anybody ever heard of these? I was watching this show on Discovery channel once, where they were having competitions on Bike building, and one guy said he invented a new clutch. This clutch was a "Twist-Grip", or so he said. Mainly, all it really was, was a clutch were you twist the left handle to engage. Has anybody ever seen one before, or even better, used one. I'm thinking of trying it when I get my bike, since it seems a lot easier, and seems to clean up the look of the bike. Any opinions?

im pretty sure the it was the detroit bors who did that...and they modified their internal throttle to do it...ive thought about it it alot and in theory it should be pretty simple to modify...but isnt everything easier in theory.

i thought the guy in the UK came up with it first, not sure of his name... but i remember seeing a few shows with the twist clutch and they always refere to him as the first to do it. it looks cool on certain bikes not sure if id ever want to try using one though.

The way I seen it, the throtltle was still in the same position, but the clutch was put into a twist-grip on the left handlebar. Yeah, the name is starting to ring a bell now, too... and I think he was from Europe. Wasn't he one of the guys who made it popular to use HUGE tires?

The guy that designed the Twist Grip Clutch is Russell Mitchell from Exile Cycles in Southern California. Yes, he's an ex-pat Brit, and as far as I'm concerned the only custom bike builder to actually build bikes that could be used as daily riders.

except the crazy tric he built one the one show. although it was cool and i thought it should had won ;\ i think his style is really nice though. his choppers actually have that chopped look to it rather than the others that add more than they take away. also that other guy that recently died.. i forget his name now, the real old school style guy he was in NY.

most of these 'choppers' are to flashy they need to start calling them something else.

Are you talking about INDIAN LARRY? In my eyes he was the best, and even though he is gone, he still IS the best. His shop was called Gasoline Alley.
The style that Russ Mitchel has is called Industrial, I think?
