matell problems

Ok I know there have been NUMEROUS recalls due to lead paint etc etc on kids toys. Well today my 3 yr old son bought a Dynaco Helicopter that looks like the one in the movie cars. We get it home and open it. at the bottom of the box was a box of exacto blades. WTF are exacto blades doing in the bottom of a toys place holder?????? the way the box is set up it had to be packaged that way. I am just glad I opened the box and not my son. Course now my sister-in-law is telling me I should go to walmart and demand a refund etc etc as well as sue walmart. WTF does walmart have to do with matell's packaging polacy????? No im going to call matell and see what will happen. I aint expecting much more than a refund of my $$$ but my son didnt get hurt so I see no reason to sue anyone. Why is it everyone is so sue happy these days??????

Wow... maybe the blades were to make an actual rotor and teach the kids how those things can chop someone up? I'm sure if your son was 14 he would be thrilled to find that in the box.

There was the potential to get hurt so the company should pay is the popular thinking.

I still have the original Voltron toys that were made of metal and were heavy as hell. Probably had lead in it as it was from the 80's. I also found some Lincoln Logs that felt like they are made of wood all tucked away inside a metal lunch box though the graphics faded so badly I cannot make out what it was.

I bring this up because these toys don't exist anymore because of safety hazards and cost.

Congratulations on having a 3 year old son who is capable of purchasing his own toys.

Seriously, It appears this helicopter is a model. In most cases, models come with exacto blades for trimming off the plastic nubs when assembling the model. It's easier and safer to put in a small box of blades than to put in one blade.

Is there an age range for the toy? Was the box of blades sealed or taped? In most cases, it's obvious the parent will assemble the model or assist with doing so. Therefore, assuming the responsible role of arranging parts and materials to begin, would have recognized the need for these blades and ensuring the child doesn't come in contact with them, as you found out. Usually, a 3 year old doesn't dig into the entire package of a toy since it may be a bit tough to open the box. They usually just unwrap it if it's a gift. Though, older children are capable of doing so.

I would contact Walmart and determine if this is normal packaging. If not, obviously then, there's a problem. As for suing, people sue for two reasons: They're lazy, no longer want to work and want easy money or they simply want to make sure nobody else gets hurt "IF" it's truly a potential for future damage. But the latter is easily identified by determining if they are seeking to fill their own pockets or if they are seeking the end results to make the manufacturer change/repair the problem and, in some cases, to pay the cost of medical expenses "IF" harm was caused. If the latter is once again legit, then an example in your case would be to sue to ensure proper packaging label to identify the contents of the package contain sharp blades inside, if of course, this is normal packaging. This helps parents decide their next step when they need to purchase and open such packages.

Doesn't look like a model to me.
Description indicates a preassembled product.
I think I would be upset to find exacto blades in the package if I gave this toy to my 4 yr old nephew.
I would raise some hell, but I wouldn't sue over it.
Unless the response I got was along the lines of "SHAG OFF".

well I got my a refund check coming and they are giving me $20 off matell toys. Oh and some free blades for my knife .

Yes my 3yr old can pick his own toys in the toy department. We let him . So far he has ignored the barbie dolls..... I pick his presents from me but grandparents and great grandparents like to give my kids $$$ for christmas/birthdays.

as for model with blades in it???? I have never seen a model that came with any blade. Either way this one was just one of those packages that blades come in loosely in the bottom of the box.
