idling problems...

A while back I had some gas vent problems which I solved by disconnecting the hose to the charcoal canister. The bike worked like a charm until about 2 weeks ago.
After about 15 minutes of riding, my idle starts to get all screwed up by going really low and stuttering. I can sort of notice while I'm riding at speeds under < 40 MPH because the bike is becoming very twitchy. Just a tiny movement of the hand makes the bike leap or sometimes I can't feel the pull that I should be getting when I open the throttle.
I checked the charcoal canister and the intake hose is still connected to the charcoal canister.
When this happens, I open up the gas lid but it doesn't help all the time. Sometimes I will open it and close it and the idling problem will be fixed, but also sometimes I can do it and it returns to running poorly about 5 seconds later.
The bike has 12,000 miles.
Any help please?
