I'm looking for info on a certain Yamaha sport touring bike.
I don't know the model or year, please help.
It has cantelever front fork with a single lay down shock link to the
front wheel? Fully enclosed fairing (can't see the engine). I noticed one
at a red light, I've never seen one before and can't find one on the internet without a model type. It had EFI and ABS decal. Silver/gray
color.

YAMAHA GTS1000, 1993-1994

The design of the GTS's front end was meant to signify the beginning of the end for the telescopic front fork. As history would have it, this was not to be. It wasn't anything to do with the effectiveness of the James Parker designed frame & front suspension... it was more to do with the fact that the GTS did not sell in any significant numbers, which gave Yamaha the feeling they had been 'burned'. The GTS was truly a great bike, with terrific handling, ABS brakes, and a very strong FZR1000-based motor, but it was priced so high that the public found it hard to shell out the cash. Kawasaki's ZX11, for instance, was $3000 cheaper. The GTS had many unique features in addition to the front end. It had an 'omega' frame, a 'car-like' front rotor, fuel injection, and a catalytic converter. Steering was a bit heavy at parking lot speeds, but once underway the handling was a treat.
Power in 1993 was 96.7bhp@7500rpm, with torque of 73.2@6500. Wet weight was 641lb's.

I love those bikes. Unfortunately, they are very quickly becoming rare collector items, so the price is going up. It is on my "someday" list, though.

Very interesting motorcycle. I've never actually seen one, though, only pictures. I wonder how many were sold in the US? (He asks, apparently forever a sucker for a rare bike.  )

Well, I just did a short search, and can't seem to find anything on total sales numbers. I know there were enough of them sold that they're still around, though. I've seen a few of them for sale on E-Bay, etc.

Unfortuantly they didnt sell that well anywhere. If I remember rightly I think the Price was very very High.Plus as a group we tend to shy away from new tech it would seem.Mind you I would recomend gettinng as many parts as you could for them now if you were thinking of buying one.

GTS available?

I found 3 in the US for sale on "Traderonline", price from $4200 to $5500,
that sounds pretty good! I'm not a street biker, but do like unusual bikes,
and this one might be on my "want" list, along with several hundred more 8)

I ran into a guy one time on the road that had ridden his across the US. He claims that the front end offered no feedback at all and you just had to learn to "trust it" in the corners. It was an honest assesment of a bike that he likely paid a whole lot of money for. There is no denying it's collector status however....
