Hey gang,

My ever-expanding music collection has dipped deeper into newer casual tunes with some Jazz influence and I'm wondering if you guys have any favourites from similar cool artists who can put out a solid album of tunes.

jazz influences like stuff with horns, piano, wind instruments... I've been listening to older Jazz stuff as well, John Coltrane, and any ideas on other similar Jazz bands from the early early eras would be great...

some current jazz-ish stuff I like is...

Emily Haines -
Telethon, RowBoat, Lottery, Doctor Blind, Reading In Bed...

Cat Power -

Lived In Bars -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVGgGW1ZalY
Maybe -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vj_tR4p184&NR=1
Satisfaction (Rolling Stones cover - newer version) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yon18DBs ... re=related

Cake - Wheels, NoPhone, Sheep Go To Heaven, Love You Madly, Pretty Pink Ribbon...

Fiona Apple - http://www.fiona-apple.com/

and other artists like Ani Difranco; Beck; Sarah Harmer, Paul Simon... or bands more rockin, like The Libertines or Arctic Monkeys... I've noticed Serj Tankian's stuff (lead singer from System of a Down) has some interesting solo stuff...

I listen to a lot of big band stuff, old classics like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and a few newer groups like Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band. Buddy Rich is my favorite jazzer of all time, though.

I actually listen to funk more than anything.

Since you like female jazz vocalists, you may want to check out Diana Krall. Her style is cool and sultry. Quite the sexy voice, with piano skills to match.

Perry

Check this lady out... A friend linked me to her youtube videos, and she's pretty amazing!

Otherwise I agree with the big band, swing, and older jazz artists! Modern "jazz" puts me to sleep every time though! My grandmother used to listens to it in her car, and whenever I rode with her, I fell asleep. (Combination of a Cadillac, an overused heater, and modern jazz... See if you can stay awake! )

Gotta give props to John Frusciante and Red Hot Chili Peppers for taking some jazzy chords and licks into alt rock.
