Welcome to Total Motorcycle.

The Bandit 400 ranks among the most fun starter bikes around (at least on my list). Too bad they quit making it.

The '82 CB900 is also a motorcycling classic. Don't expect much from the high/low gearbox. After some initial experimentation, most people would just pick one of the two ranges and just leave it there all the time (depending on whether they drove mostly city or highway). There wasn't a noticable difference between the two ranges. One of the reasons that this feature never went beyond the CB900

Good luck with the rebuild.
