Does anyone on here use disc brake locks? Those little guys you clip on to the front. I'm going to be doing quite a bit of touring this summer and would like to get some sort of security on the bike. Any suggestions?????
I've heard the scorpio systems are pretty good - but they are pretty pricey:-(

Disclaimer: I am pretty sure no one has ever tried to steal either of my bikes while at my office or other places I have left my bike with my disc lock in place, so I have no idea how effective it truly is.

Now, having said that, I purchased the Li'l Bully Disc Lock from New Enough in bright orange.

And purchased one of the disc lock reminder cables to go with it. Both are brightly colored and there is no doubt the thing is in place. I did not get one with an alarm figuring it would not help that much.

I like this setup due to its simplicity and visibility. Remember though, if someone wants your bike bad enough, they will take it.

I will say if you use a disc lock, get in the habit of moving your bike by foot power either back or forwards a couple of feet.

You don't want to be setting off under power having forgotten to take the disc lock off

(that includes going into an immediate wheelie and realising the locks still on part way through Thankfully not me)

Disc locks are convienient and easily transportable, but I don't think I'd feel safe with anything but a chain or cable lock. Two guys in a minivan can pick up your bike, get it into the van and be gone in less than a minute. I would rather use a cheap cable lock affixed to a stationary object than the best disc lock out there. It's all about making it more difficult and more time-consuming to steal your bike. I'm not convinced a disc lock does either. In fact I don't consider it much more secure than the fork lock since it doesn't prevent your bike from being lifted any better.

Disk locks are nothing more than a deterrent but better than nothing, a cable is a lot better but a PITA to carry around and that goes for the big U shaped locks, a hidden switch cutting power to the coils will stop them from starting it but not carrying it off, the auto lock key fob activated lock downs are good but there has been a lot of problems getting them to work right and still be able to run the bike or for that matter work at all, a bike cover is one of the best deterrents.
IF you do get a disk lock tie a cord to it long enough to slip over your throttle grip to remind you that it's there because it not a matter of *if* but *when* you try to drive off with it still on especially right after you get it, and if you do your going down and maybe do some real damage to your brake system. Don't ask how I know.

I have the same disk lock as NWTrtle. It won't keep a determined thief from taking my bike (that's what really, really good insurance is for) but it'll dissuade the jerk who just wants to try to take it for a joy ride. And I like the bright orange because it's quite obvious, especially with a bright yellow coil running from the lock to the handlebar (you have to buy that separately...I think.)

If they want the bike bad enough, no lock will save it.

That said, I use a large Kryptonite lock. Those little things that go through your rotors can be forgotten, much to your embaresment and pocket book.
