Because I have friends that have been riding for years before I got the itch I have always give bikes alot of space when I'm driving.
If they are in front of me I like to give as much space as possible, kind of like running blocker for them, but that is nearly impossible here in NJ.

everytime I give a biker breathing room some twit sucking down $7.00 cup of coffee and yacking on the phone has to jump right in and usually thier mentally challenged cousins are following, 5 ft soccer mom in a suburban with one kid in the back, work van packed like a clown car with illeagal's, and the gang banger wanna be from the cul de sac of Mc Mansions.did you ever notice that when somebody is blasting music real loud in thier car it's never a good song.

NJ the last communist strong hold in the western hemisphere.

I've had the same experience here in NJ. I started always giving 2 seconds between me (in my car) and the car in front of me and maintaining speed. It isn't always impossible, but it usually involves slowing down to rebuild the two-seconds over again as someone jumps in your space buffer.

Since I'm not attempting to protect someone by creating space for a motocycle at the same time - I just lay off and rebuild and I'm ok. But some of these people drive right up your butt.

I've noticed though - even I'm speeding - and keeping my two seconds - they usually don't like staying behind you. I'll be doing 70, but it isn't fast enough if I've got two seconds in front of me so they pass me.

I have noticed one very big deal, though. I used to have to panic break a lot before I started reading about motorcycling and getting interested in it. Now, that hardly ever happens. With two seconds in front of me, when I can do it, just about anything can happen in front of me and I don't have to panic break - I just need to break.

The upshot, is even when someone is right on my a$$ - since I'm not breaking hard, they pose less of a threat of hitting me from behind.
