How Much Do You Spend on Motorcycle Insurance?

Just in general - so I can get an idea if the amounts I'm looking at are too expensive - how much do you pay for motorcycle insurance?

So far, I've only looked at Progressive, as they are the only ones with an online way to get an estimate - and honestly I hate talking to people on the phone - even the people I like. :)

Anyway, if I go with a 08 Rebel, or used Honda VLX, I get estimates of around $350, for 100/300 coverages, comp/collision with $500 deductable.

That isn't too bad.

If I get a 08 Ninja 250R, it is more like $600+. Now, I'm not wholly going to make my bike purchase decision on the basis of insurance cost, but the Ninja 250R is a beginner bike, and it is more of a standard than a sport (even though it is marketed as a sport), so why the big kill on the insurance?

Any recommendations on insurance carriers are welcome.

I pay $8/month for my Rebel, $28/month for my SV, and I think the Spouse Thingy's Honda VLX is $25/month. Fully insured through USAA, with a $200 deductible.

You typically get better rates if you insure with whomever insures your car (if you have a car, that is.) We're getting some decent multi-vehicle discounts with 3 bikes and 2 cars on the policy.

I dunno what kind of coverage you got but I went with Rider Insurance and I'm paying like $300 a year or less.

depends on your age. I am 29 and I pay 290 for my VLX for full coverage and no deductable.

I pay $75 a year for 100/300/50k from Progressive with uninsured/underinsured and comprehensive. I drop collision when bike/car get older. When my 97 GS was totalled I bought it back for $100 and fixed it myself with approx $250 in parts. Didn't bother with a few minor cosmetic blemishes.

I'm 25 and married... I pay $90 per year thru Allstate for liability only on my '07 Ninja 250. I forget what the coverages are, but I asked for the lowest possible.

There are times when living in Canada reveals truly how expensive it can be. My insurance for my 08 Shadow 750 Spirit is, wait for it...$1100/year. We here have to insure it even if, because of the weather, we're not able to ride it. I believe, it is as a result of our insurance laws here, that motorcycling is in the decline big time. However, if you want to ride, you got to pay the man. Just so you know, that was the least expensive coverage I could find. Most were in the $1500 to $1800 range. Like all lifestyle hobbies in this country anyway, it aint cheap to play.

How are you able to get 1100, 1500 or 1800 on insurance in Canada? I thought it was controlled by the government, so wouldn't it cost the same everywhere you went?

Only controlled by the provincial government in 3 provinces. RevBrian's just fortunate enough to not be living in one of them! ;)

The '08 250R is a beginner bike, but it's also a bike with a lot of expensive plastic (even more than the '07 model). For full coverage, the insurance company has to take into account the potential expense of replacing that plastic. Dropping a plastic covered bike, even at a relatively low speed, will result in higher repair costs than the same drop on a naked bike.

As to the original question. I just have liability and un/underinsured coverage on my bike (100/300). It currently runs $95 a year through progressive.
