Ok stupid question. How do you check the oil in a 05 Yamaha V-Star 650? There is no dip stick that measures how much oil is in the crankcase. All that I can see when I unscrew where I think the oil goes is a piece of plastic and no oil.
I have tried to find information on Google but so far I cant find a manual or any good information. But then again I am not a master Googler.

there is a sight glass at the bottom of the cover below the oil filler cap. check the level in the glass with the bike upright (get a friend to hold it if necessary) There will be marks on the glass to show where the oil level should be.

warm it up first, has to be at operating temperatures to correctly gauge the oil level, otherwise you run the risk of overfilling

Good call. On that same note, if you want to do your own changes do them with a warm engine. After refilling, run the engine for a minute then recheck the oil level again.

You cannot have oil in the crank case of a two stroke. You can have clutch or tranny oil though.

I've never owned a PW, but every 2 stroke dirt bike I have had has always had a level check screw/bolt on the tranny. Remove this screw and when oil comes out of the hole with the bike level, it's full. The screw has never been marked, but there has always been a volume number cast into the cases someplace close by it. Most hold about 800cc-to a liter, your PW might be less... like 500-600cc, but that's just a guess.
