Putting Barbie on the barbie

MONTREAL: A Canadian restaurant owner is invoking Australian slang in its defence in a David and Goliath court battle against US toymaker Mattel.

Canada's Supreme Court will hear the case of Barbie the doll versus Barbie the BBQ restaurant.

The restaurant owner says the Australian slang "barbie" makes people think of barbecue, not plastic dolls.

The toy company registered Barbie and Barbies for its dolls three decades ago in Canada.

Kinda weird as Mattel also sued a toy shop called "Barbie's Toys" here in Calgary just last year. The owner's name was Barbie and Mattel sued saying that she could not use her name for her business as it was owned by Mattel.

Corporations are exceedingly thin-skinned about even a whiff of someone profiting from their good name, even if the other guy had it first. There have been other cases down here, and some of the little guys have even won in court, which is unusual.

Just more greedy money grubbing corporations. :P

If he'd painted the place pink, and stacked the walls with vintage Barbie dolls, then maybe it'd be an issue.
